Ravishing Right-Brained Resumes! (Analytical types welcome.)

If you’ve been writing resumes for a while, you know it’s easy to get stuck in a creative rut. One minute, you’re on top of your game, strategies and formats start coming to you the moment you first engage your client in conversation, and it’s all running like clockwork. And then…

Does it ever seem to be going a little too smoothly? Doesn’t that resume look a bit like your last five? Couldn’t that tag line really apply to many people in the same field? Why, for the sake of all that is holy, aren’t there more synonyms for “managed?!”

In this half-day course, Kim Mohiuddin will facilitate a group exploration of the entire resume-writing process. She’ll bring strategies from her own practice, share new ideas from months of research and polling the top minds in careers and marketing, and foster conversation among attendees about what is working--and what is not!--as we strive to hone our skills and distinguish ourselves in the market.

We’ll re-examine what we thought we knew about information gathering, language, strategy, and design as we discuss fresh approaches to:

  • Gathering information from personality assessments, professional endorsements, Google, and intake worksheets and interviews
  • Keeping visual and content variety while writing for more clients
  • Creating the best strategy for each client
  • Designing a document with visual distinction while accounting for the potential pitfalls inherent in technology

What if you could find new ways to:

  • Get your clients to open up about their accomplishments and describe the context that makes them meaningful?
  • Gain an intimate understanding of what makes your client “tick” so that you can develop a professional brand that jumps off the page, painting a picture of a living, breathing person?
  • Create truly one-of-a-kind communications that elevate your final product and reinvigorate your own professional passion?

How can you strengthen the storytelling component of your communications? How does storyboarding a résumé result in the most effective formatting? Have you ever used mind maps to interview a client?

Find the answers to these questions and many more at this groundbreaking pre-conference program. Let’s start our 2013 conference with a creative bang!

PDI #2:

Moving from Good to Great: Taking Your Writing to the Next Level

Are you just starting your resume business? Have you been writing or working with students/clients for years, but feeling “behind the times” in your approach?

We all know the importance of a good resume and strive to be at the forefront of dynamic demands in career marketing mediums to give candidates an advantage. We jump in to working with clients, knowing that we can bring value beyond what they are doing themselves . . . but are we doing the best for them that we can? Are they getting the attention from hiring managers that they deserve?

In this half-day institute, Marie Zimenoff will facilitate a hands-on session to help you build on your existing knowledge and polish your writing and marketing skills. She’ll bring examples and strategies from her own practice with clients including executives, engineers, career changers, students/recent graduates, and ex-felons!

We’ll explore the latest trends in writing and layout. Strategies, examples, and resources will cover how to move from good to great in the following areas:

  • Asking better questions to get better content
  • Moving from generic to “branded” documents
  • Using formatting and strategy to make every client credible
  • Writing to multiple audiences (recruiters, HR professionals, and hiring managers)
  • Leveraging content across job search/social media mediums

What if you could:

  • Feel more confident about working with a “difficult” client?
  • Deliver stronger, more unique content that positions the client for success?
  • Have a system to put together documents quickly while tailoring the strategy?
  • Be seen as the expert on your campus, in your office, or within your target industry?
This session will give you the boost you need to spring your way into "expert" status in career marketing and will provide the resources you need to continue to outpace your peers so your candidates can outpace theirs.

Jump start your 2013 conference with a solid foundation in the latest techniques, strategies, and resources!
